UNICO comments on university patent activity

When an article is called "Patents, Patents, Patents," it must include Unico.


In this particular one, our Marek Štěpán commented on the declining number of patents granted to universities: "It is true that Czech universities' patent activity has been declining in recent years, but we do not consider this trend to be negative a priori. Rather, we see it as the end of an era of filing patents purely for the purpose of "earning points" in the national research and development evaluation (the former coffee grinder evaluation). Instead, greater emphasis is now being placed on the quality of patents, and scientific teams, together with university management, are assessing more closely whether a given patent has real potential for commercial use."
